On 16 June , the music video for "Somebody's Love" was uploaded to his YouTube channel, thereby announcing his next album, titled Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea.
A second track from the album, "Anywhere" was released on 19 August Passenger recorded Whispers II at the same time as recording Whispers, releasing it as an extension of the first. He released Whispers II on 20 April On 24 March , Passenger unveiled "Whispers", the title track of his new album, as part of his set at the Teenage Cancer Trust charity concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London where he also performed alongside Ed Sheeran.
On 26 March, Passenger announced details of his fifth studio album. He released Whispers on 9 June Talking to Digital Spy about the album he said, "This is easily the most 'up' album I've ever made, it's quite cinematic.
There are lots of big stories and big ideas. There are also some sombre moments about loneliness and death but hey, it wouldn't be a Passenger album without those. During the summer and autumn of , Rosenberg toured the UK, opening for Jools Holland and good friend Ed Sheeran , the latter of whom he had known since he was about 15 while living in Cambridge. He also opened for Ed Sheeran on his four out of five sell out dates in Ireland in January and in Australia and New Zealand in early , and supported Sheeran in his Brighton dates and in Reading.
After the break-up of Passenger, Rosenberg kept the stage-name Passenger and took to busking for a solo music career. He first took his act in October to Australia, where he supported acts such as Lior and Sydneysiders Elana Stone and Brian Campeau , and then played One Movement, a major music industry-focus festival in Perth.
This earned him a big following in Australia and he was selling out seater venues across Australia. His debut solo album, Wide Eyes Blind Love, was released in , produced and mixed by former bandmate Andrew Phillips who also provided backing vocals, and played guitar and other instruments and vocally supported by Isobel Anderson.
He also played various shows in the United Kingdom during this time, including a support slot for Turin Brakes' tenth anniversary show at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London.
Definitely some vibes from Abbey Road or Rubber Soul maybe. Mike: I hope so. My guitar player Benny is a phenomenal player and a big George Harrison fan, so he definitely seeps into his playing. I actually think there are a few Beatles moments on this record. Obviously, I make music post-Beatles, so they influence me, but this is the first record that it comes through quite strongly, and I, of course, embrace it.
Quite a list there. Who was the first singer or band you ever saw perform live or the first one that had a big effect on you? I think he did have a band with him, but it was so subtle and really centred around him. Just understanding the power of that. There are very few people who can do that. He was one of the best. What a cool position that is. Talking here to a Northern Irishman, Foy Vance is a similar guy. I think he is one of the best writers of his and our generation. Sometimes you need to compromise to get to a wider audience and perhaps he never did that.
I respect him so deeply and love his music. You started your career busking. Have there been any impromptu busking performances during ? Mike: No, when we thought the album would come out in May, we built this busking tour around the album release, but sadly January is not the time to go out busking, COVID or not. I think the last time was a couple of years ago.
I like to get out still and do it if I can. There is something very intimate and very real about busking, which is really at the centre of how Passenger began. It feels really good every couple of years to check in with that. An essential question coming up; Who would be your favourite Batman? Mike: I love the recent Batman films. I think they are phenomenal. I think the clown represents that really well. I think that was a subtle influence as well. It just feels like it ties in the whole record really well.
Mike: Yeah, I love that track as well. It was a bit out of my comfort zone. Newswire Powered by. Close the menu. Rolling Stone. Log In. To help keep your account secure, please log-in again.
